Recent conversation between myself and my 3 year old nephew:
“Aunt Lee, are you a bitch?” (whispers last word)
I, somewhat surprisingly reply, “No, and you are not allowed to say bad words like that.”
My nephew matter-of-factly states “Yes, I can. I can say bad words if I whisper them.”
The conversation went on a bit further, mostly involving Santa and his super-sharp ears that can even hear whispered curse words in the summer. Anyway, this conversation got me thinking about how many times we, as adults, may believe the same idea. Whispered words don’t hurt as bad, or mean the same than spoken words, and we may even consider our thoughts as a type of whisper. And although we don’t have a jolly man in a red suit to answer to, it is important for us to remember that even whispered words will fall on someone’s ears eventually. Please make sure you won’t be ashamed, angered, hurt, or afraid when they do.
Peace
